For artists

How we work with artists

Making things comes with its own weather: long stretches alone, money that arrives unevenly, and work that other people get to judge. We understand that without a long explanation.

Here is what that means in the room.

  • We ask about the work

Your clinician asks what you make and what it asks of you, the way a friend with some training would.

  • We keep your schedule in mind

Deadlines, shows, residencies and long days in the studio come and go. We schedule around them where we can, and say plainly when we cannot.

  • We do not treat the work as a symptom

Your art is not something to fix. We do not ask you to make less, or to make differently.

  • We take privacy seriously in a small town

In your first session we talk about what happens when we run into each other at the post office, the gallery or the farmers' market.

What we do not do

Therapy is not the studio

We do not critique your work, advise you on your career or tell you what to make next. Our clinicians are trained to listen, not to curate.

We do not promise that therapy will change how you work. What happens in the room is up to you and your clinician, and we cannot say in advance how it will go.

Would you like to talk to someone who gets it?

Write to us and tell us what you make. Our coordinator replies and suggests a clinician.
